Originally from Chicago, I attended a liberal arts college where I entered as a pre-med major, but after studying abroad my second year in Latin America, I found himself replacing the pre-med major for a double major in Spanish and biology. After graduating and spending a year abroad working in a children’s home, I began work on an M.A. and Ph.D. in Latin American literary and cultural studies. Through this experience, I realize how much my studies in the humanities have impacted me, not only professionally but also personally as a father. As a Spanish professor at a small liberal arts university, I try to use the course content that I teach to give mini-snapshots of how the humanities can intersect with other areas of knowledge and in our daily lives. It is where this idea of flash humanities originated, small doses of humanity injected in our personal lives—something I believe can supplement our PK-12 education—. As a strong proponent of the humanities, I seek to use my outside-insider knowledge of public education and connect it with my professional training, that is, taking my inside knowledge outside of my normal space.
